Tip #1: Look!  Up in the Sky…

For taking some of the pressure off the moment at hand, the first trick up your sleeve should be distraction, distraction, distraction.  Use whatever tools you think will work; consider this your moment to shine and practice resourcefulness.  Sing, dance, mime with a sock puppet, or whip out some favorite storybooks. 

When it comes to helping your child through a round of injections, there can be no diversion too sneaky…or cheesy.

Tip #2: Pacify

Before leaving the house, make sure you pack your bag with some of your baby’s favorite toys, a pacifier (assuming he takes one), and a lovey, like a soft blanket or doll. 

Another trick that’s worth trying at least once a year: soothe them with sweets, either by dipping her binky in a bit of sugar, or allowing her to take from the lollipop jar.

Tip #3:  Put on your best poker face

What, me worry?  That’s the attitude you want to convey to your child before and after the procedure.  Kids are very good at picking up even the smallest hint of tension on your part, so act cool, paste on a smile, and prepare for whatever comes next.

Tip #4: Ahem, ahem.

Believe it or not, there’s some research indicating that coughing before and during vaccinations is an effective way to reduce the pain. 

In 2010, the journal Pediatrics published a report that focused on children between the ages of four to twelve, finding that faking a cough before getting a shot, and then, again, during the round of shots, resulted in less trauma.  Alternatively, your child could pretend to blow a feather across the examining table, or soda bubbles through a straw.

Tip #5: Ease the pain

After the nurse has administered all the shots, and the tears have (almost) dried, you still have a few options for relieving the pain. 

Gently rub the pinprick spot to reduce swelling, and apply a topical anesthetic, such as EMLA cream

A small amount of pain reliever, such as acetaminophen, will also go a long way towards pain management.

Tip #6: Seek alternatives

With medical technology practically bursting at the seams, it’s good to know that there are some new alternatives to painful injections. 

Find out if your child is eligible to receive FluMist, an innovative flu vaccine in the form of a nasal spray.

Find an exercise that you love, and then find another one.  Remember, variety is  the spice of a life-long workout goal.  If music gives you energy, then choose sports activities that go well with an inexpensive MP3 player, like jogging, elliptical stepping, or indoor cycling.  Like the water?  Swim laps at the local YMCA, or enlist in a water aerobics class.

Whichever activity you choose, it should be something that you look forward to, and boosts your mood.

4- Avoid boredom.

Especially during the first few weeks of a change in diet, keep busy with a new hobby, an outside activity, or just a drive to the mall (avoiding the food court, naturally).

Boredom is one of the most common barriers to weight loss success.

5- Stay on the wagon.

Ignore your inner pessimist.

Say positive affirmations (they work!), think yes-I-can thoughts, and paste a smile on your face, even if you feel differently.

The term, “practice makes perfect” definitely applies about behavior modification.  Train yourself to expect the best, and eventually, positive thoughts will come naturally.  If you do fall off the wagon, get up quickly.  The longer you stay on the ground, the harder it is to get back up.

Many healthy sweeteners hold up well in dessert recipes, and still more are good substitutes for sugar in your coffee or tea.  Visit your nearest health food store; they’re likely to have a cornucopia of natural sweeteners at your disposal.

  • Stevia, an herb that is available in powder and liquid form
  • Agave nectar, the byproduct of the agave cactus

Treat your back to some relief

If you have fibromyalgia, then you will probably have to learn how to manage your pain symptoms all your life, including lower back pain.  But that doesn’t mean that you have to tolerate suffering- by observing a combination of exercise, healthy diet, topical pain medications, and alternative healing therapies, you can dramatically improve your quality of life and well-being.

Here are some therapeutic exercises for your lower back, including a few that you should avoid:

Crunches or Sit-ups?

Partial crunches are excellent for strengthening the abdominal muscles- a necessary network of support for your back.  By developing firm stomach muscles, you reduce your chances of suffering from backaches.  Crunches are less traumatic on your body than sit-ups, which are difficult to perform without causing damage to your spine.

DO: practice partial crunches every day, in sets of 8-12.  With feet planted firmly on the ground, and arms behind your head, lift your upper body up by squeezing your abdominal muscles, being careful to avoid using your arms to pull yourself up.

DON’T: practice full sit-ups- you’re more likely to damage your lower back than anything else.

Hamstring stretch or Toe Touches?

Forget “no pain, no gain.”  You have enough pain in your life.  Standing toe touches aggravate your lower back and cause muscular soreness.  A better option is to lie on your back and lift up one leg at a time, gently reaching up towards your toes.  Floor hamstring stretches are excellent lower-back stretches that are safe for all ages.

DO: practice floor hamstring stretches, holding for 15-30 seconds per leg.

DON’T: practice standing toe touches, which may injure your spine.

Leg lifts or Knee Lifts?

Trying to lift both legs up at the same time, as with the popular leg lift exercise, is a great way to work your abs, but it can also cause lower back pain.  Instead, lie on your back with one foot firmly on the ground, and slowly raise your other leg up off the ground, counting to 10, and then gently lowering.  Next, repeat with the other leg.  For a less strenuous version, lift your bended knee instead of your outstretched leg.  Finish with a gentle “hug” by bringing both knees up and wrapping your arms around them, squeezing them towards your body.

DO:  Practice gentle knee lifts, alternating one leg at a time.

DON’T: Practice leg lifts on both legs at once.

Lie on your back with both heels planted firmly on the ground and both arms pointing towards your hips.  Squeezing your buttocks, carefully raise your hips, using your heels and arms for support, gently tilting your pelvis upwards.  Try to make your body into a straight line, from your knees to your shoulders.

The Cobra is an excellent yoga exercise for the lower back.  Lying on your stomach, place your hands on the floor, on either side of your chest.  Looking upwards, gently lift your chest up off the ground, without leaning on your hands, using your stomach muscles.  Finally, straighten your arms and position them as close to your stomach as is comfortable, relax your back muscles, and ease into the stretch.

For all-purpose cooking, olive oil and canola oil are versatile staples that work in most recipes, with the exception of deep-frying or searing.  Other oils are ideal for cold salad dressings- a few drops of dark toasted sesame oil add a rich smoky flavor to Oriental chicken salad and pasta.

Flax seed oil adds flavor to pasta salads or yogurt dips, and provides alpha-linolenic acid, a heart-healthy form of omega-3. Health experts link flax seed oil with cardiovascular health and normal insulin response.

Wheat germ oil is another exceptional agent. Rich in vitamin E, wheat germ has antioxidant properties for combating free radicals, thus boosting heart health. Use wheat germ oil sparingly in marinades and spreads, as it contains 17% saturated fats. Wheat germ oil also stimulates your immune system and promotes healthy brain functioning.

High smoking point oils

Use for searing or browning

Almond oil and hazelnut oil are the choicest oils to use for high-heat cooking, with only 7% saturated fats. Nut oils have a distinct flavor that enhance dishes like seared salmon cutlets, or “blackened” Cajun chicken.

Olive oil is a flavorful runner-up that is slightly higher in saturated fats (14%). “Light” colored olive oil has the highest smoking point, while less refined extra virgin olive oil is more suited to medium-high cooking temperatures.

High-oleic sunflower oil is also low in saturated fats and holds up well under high heat.

Oils that should stay on the shelf

Whichever oil your prefer, think a second time before using coconut oil, which packs a whopping dose of 92% saturated fats and has very few health benefits.
